Thoughts & Prayers
I am so grateful to be with family & close friends this holiday season, and we are all extremely lucky for all that we have, and for each other.
We received word today that someone we went to high school with, Ian Marek, died in a motorcycle accident this passed week on December 17th in Florida, where he lived and went to school. His sister Kiera is a friend and was in our 2001 graduating class.
While we haven’t actively kept in touch, I felt it important to post this to say that both my and Rachel’s thoughts and prayers are with the Marek family as well as Libby, Ian’s fiance.
We are sorry for their incomprehensibly tragic loss, and we are thinking of you during this difficult time.
Meeting with Prospects
There’s something so cool about meeting with prospects — especially the ones that are truly excited about the market you are in and their products.
I just got home from dinner out with some prospects we have in LA from Europe. Super nice people, super interested in what we are doing and really professional. It was a fantastic meeting.
I dunno, maybe I’m really geeky, but I get SO excited and worked about when I talk about our technology and all the extremely cool things that consumers and businesses alike can do with it. I sometimes have to ask myself while I’m talking if I’m getting carried away and need to shutup!
But, there’s nothing better for me than a receptive audience that is really into what we’re going and the products that we have. Coupled with some great food and rapport building, it makes for my kinda night.
I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe it’s because I grew up around Sales - my Dad has been in Sales ever since I was born and is truly great. I learned a lot from listening to him take calls from my room doing homework while in school, or when I was working from home running my Web dev company, etc… I love how he approaches a sale and puts effort into the person he talks to.
I couldn’t have asked for a better person to learn about Sales from. It’s such a critical aspect of where I want to go in my career, being able to remember how I would hear him talk and build rapport with whoever he was on the phone with helps me everyday in my career. Now it’s just a matter of putting some that into practice and playing the experience building game.
Working Late
Does anyone else work better late at night? It may seem cool, but trust me, it sucks. Especially when you have to still get up with the rest of the World.
I work really well / do my best work late into the night, but when that alarm goes off at 6:30 regardless, man does it suck. My wife has to practically yell in my ear to get outta bed — and that’s no fun for either of us.
I’m still working on trying to come up with a good compromise, but have yet to find one. I hate going to bed for some reason, as I hate sleep, but I just can’t wake-up when I need to.
Ahh, paradoxes galore. Yummy. I’m off to Demmx tomorrow if anyone is reading / going / whatever.
Casino Royale = Good Movie
I haven’t seen most of the recent James Bond movies. I grew up watching them as a kid, when my Dad would put them on TV and we’d sit down and turn up the volume really loud on his surround sound system and enjoy the action.
I admit, my favorite Bond does buck the trend. I really enjoyed Roger Moore in the title role. I always liked the way he delivered the one-liners, and some of the movies he was in were my favorites: The Spy Who Loved Me, The Man with the Golden Gun, and so forth.
However, just as Christian Bale did earlier last year with Batman Begins, Daniel Craig made his Bond much darker and truer to Ian Fleming’s original mold. I like it when this happens, when it’s supposed to happen. Clearly, a darker version of American Pie where Jim is a brooding, on the line of the law super-agent / super hero may not be the best way to re-boot a franchise of that type.
My point is, I really enjoy it when I know that I’m watching a movie that is close / very true to how the original creator intended. Batman wasn’t meant to have nipples, and James Bond wasn’t meant to overpower an actual story with bright flashes and loud bangs.
Casino Royale is a great movie, and I’m told by a bigger Bond aficionado than myself that he has placed Daniel Craig right above Pierce Brosnan on his list (under Sean Connery of course), and that’s good enough for me. I can’t wait for the next one to arrive.
