It’s tough to be aware of everything that’s going on in a company; especially when you’ve been dropped in, have hit the ground running, and are getting a really solid handle on how everything goes.
The trick is not to get bogged down in crap, and slow up the process of being immersed in the culture so you can maintain that “freshness” and new perspective. It makes for a helpful atmostphere, not only for yourself, but for those around you.
One thing that I always like to keep in the front of my mind is that even though you may be bogged down in putting out fires, or short-term tasks, it’s critical (at least in my mind) to come up for air and think broadly. However, that’s difficult to do, and I’m a broad thinker by my nature so I may do it a little too much.
I suppose there is no answer, except to be aware of both and not to lose touch with too much detail or not enough.
