The Funny Thing About Blogging

It’s pretty obvious: I have a horrible blog. No, no. I don’t lie. I haven’t posted in a very long time, which is the funny thing about blogging. I could have posted about a lot of things, such as business tripping to New York two weeks ago. Or, about where I am right now - New Jersey. But, alas, I have not.

So, is that OK? I wonder how many bloggers go through these ups and downs, only to come back with some sort of vengeance. It sounds funny, but as I write, this I’m getting excited. Excited about all sorts of things, such working through the big task list I have in front of me, and strategizing with some team members when I return to the office on Monday. I’d like to think I’m not alone, but there is something about the real-time delivery of information that’s very cool.

To jump on a complete different topic, but what am I doing in New Jersey? I was training a client’s fulfillment provider today before their e-commerce presence launches early next week. I enjoy training, and I believe it is key to the whole product management job. Obviously, you can’t spend in inordinate amount of time doing it, but you learn so much about your product since, in many cases, a lot of folks in the training are seeing things for the first time. This is so important to the ongoing development of a solid product. You need that feedback to keep things fresh. Combined with well-gathered market data, and you’ve got a pretty good set of feedback to work from.

Take today for instance. While giving two training sessions, I gathered about 10 new potential features. While they probably won’t all be added to the roadmap(s) for the product line, it’s important to get out there and work with the people that will be (and are) using the product, and those that buy the product. They are such different groups, and have wildly different perspectives.

Man, how much of a geek am I? No - wait. I can answer that in one sentence.

11:30pm on a Friday night. I am sitting in my hotel room, blogging about my job. Wow. If nothing else, it’s allowed me to think things through, and I am realizing that doing this is sort of like talking a subject or idea out with someone, which I find that I need to do in order to fully understand it; even if it’s something I’ve come up with.

If you are reading this, and it seems like a stream of consciousness, I apologize, because it sort of is.
